On Thursday, House Speaker Steve Sviggum gaveled for silence on the House floor for what he called an important announcement of a historic anniversary. It was 60 years ago to the day, on Feb. 15, the speaker said. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a few weeks into his third term. Penicillin was first used to treat humans. The governor was Harold E. Stassen, whose salary was $7,000. The Legislature met every other year and legislators were paid $1,000.
