No matter how far race relations progress in America, when it comes to religion, blacks and whites still mostly pray separately.
But Sunday, Grace Episcopal Church's largely white congregation on West Washington Avenue and the choir from Fisher Street's Mount Zion Baptist Church welcomed a busload of black Milwaukee Episcopalians for a truly multicultural religious celebration. The event, which focused on issues of race and brought about 200 people to Grace Church, included hymns, a performance by a young dance troupe and a liturgy that was more like a university lecture.
