Seattle Mariners management has finally agreed to pay the team's fair share of the cost of building Safeco Field. Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln said the decision to drop the attempt to squeeze taxpayers for another $60 million "should get the cloud off Safeco Field."
"We listened to our fans," Lincoln said.
It's about time.
What fans, and elected officials, have been saying all along was clear enough: "Not one more dime!" The Mariners wanted the stadium done in time for the 1999 baseball season, so that they could begin harvesting the increased revenues they assured us a new stadium would bring.
