The annual arts circus that is the Melbourne Festival, last year made a special feature of celebrating the work of one man: Johann Sebastian Bach, born 1685, died 1750. In the words of Festival Director Jonathan Mills, `The coincidence of the 250th anniversary of Bach's death and the turn of the Millennium is a unique opportunity for a major retrospective of Bach's work'. Mills deserves admiration and congratulation for his vision of placing Bach at the centre of the Festival, and for the box office success of this gamble.
