Feb. 19--A friend from out of town and I were walking along Bayshore Boulevard recently when she looked to the east and commented, "I didn't know there were hills in Tampa."
I laughed at her (although I have to admit I thought the same thing when I moved here) and began to explain that those "hills" across the bay aren't hills in the nature-made sense.
In fact, I said, they're slightly radioactive piles, or stacks, of gypsum. Gypsum results when sulfuric acid is blended with phosphate rock to produce phosphoric acid, a main ingredient in fertilizer. Fertilizer is big ...
