2001 FEB 2 - (NewsRx.com) -- The tissues of the retina and the tissues of a portion of the brain called the cerebral cortex are similar. However, in rats with diabetes, glucose accumulates in the retina instead of the cerebral cortex, new research performed at Case Western Reserve University shows.

"The retina is embryologically similar to cerebral cortex and the tissues of both are exposed to similar blood glucose concentrations," commented J. Tang, who, with others in the Department of Medicine at Case Reserve, compared glucose concentrations in rat tissues.
