Bear with us as we try to fathom why Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rossotti would announce, just as tax preparation season gets under way, that audits - already at a record low in 1999 - fell nearly 50 percent last year.
It makes as much sense as the Washington State Patrol telling drivers that half its patrol cars will be sidelined New Year's Eve for mechanical problems. Or Brink's issuing a news release saying the number of guards on armored trucks has been cut by a third.
Whoopee! Talk about ammunition for the bad angel perched on the shoulder: Come on, the angel hisses, don't be a patsy. Why be honest? Nobody's watching.
