Banishing white blood cells; Safety group urges FDA to adopt new rules for prefiltering blood.

Almost certainly, the nation's blood banks will unilaterally excommunicate the maligned white blood cell from their supplies-and at considerable cost.

Industry insiders say it's just a matter of time-likely by the end of the year-before all blood products sold to hospitals by regional blood banks are routinely prefiltered of white blood cells, or leukocytes.

Again, hospitals must accept the reality that the price of yet another vital purchase is skyrocketing, although many argue that the overall cost benefits to the hospital far outweigh the consequential $30 to $40 increase in each unit of blood. A unit of whole blood sells for roughly $100, depending on the region.
