FIRST QUARTER contracts for crude sulfate turpentine (CST) settled at 50 cents per gallon, and it appears that this price will remain steady at least through the first few months of 2001. However, numerous industry watchers say that a paper industry slowdown, coupled with waning supplies of CST, may be indicative of a potential price jump, perhaps even a sizable one, that could take place well before January 2002.

The upward pricing pressure on CST reverses what has been a period of flat pricing for the product. CST prices remained at 50 cents per gallon throughout all four quarters of 2000, continuing the previous year's trend.
