Sporadic reports have appeared in the literature linking hepatotoxicity to the use of both western and Chinese herbs. While in some cases this has been clearly linked to specific herbs such as greater celandine (Chelidonium majus) and germander (Teucrium chamaedrys), one study on traditional Chinese herbal medicine found no single herbal ingredient could account for observed cases of liver injury. [1] Since little is known about the frequency of such effects, a study was initiated in Germany to investigate this phenomenon in a hospital for Traditional Chinese Medicine. [2]
