DALLAS _ Henry Moore was a maverick. Hard to believe, given the late British artist's soft-spoken manner and the pleasing contours of sculptures that grace public spaces from New York's Lincoln Center to the Scottish Highlands and the hills of Jerusalem, as well as the Dallas City Hall plaza.
Surprises galore await visitors to the first American retrospective of his work since 1983, which opens on the weekend Sunday at the Dallas Museum of Art. "Henry Moore: Sculpting the 20th Century" overturns a number of popular misconceptions, including the notion that his art is a throwback to an earlier era and has little relevance to contemporary audiences.
