KANNAPOLIS, N.C. _ As he sat on the tailgate of his pickup truck in his driveway, lifelong Kannapolis resident Otis Broadway tried to estimate the popularity of Dale Earnhardt here.
"I'd say," Broadway said, shielding his eyes from the late afternoon sun, "about 60 percent of the people pulled for him."
That was an estimate made before Earnhardt's death Sunday in the Daytona 500.
On Friday, a walk around Earnhardt's hometown indicated that the percentage had jumped to pretty near 100 percent.
