I SPENT a week last year in a beautiful farmhouse in the Dordogne Valley with my wife and a cat called Emile.
It spent much of the day lying in the sunshine by the swimming pool and enjoyed having its tummy tickled. The cat seemed quite happy too.
Its owners had moved out of the house for the summer and Emile had refused to go with them, preferring instead to find his own food among the fields of maize and rape, thus reducing the lizard and rodent population of the tiny hamlet of St Agne to a few walking wounded.
