Ruth J. Simmons is headed back to the Ivy League, but this time as the first African American to lead one of its institutions. Former Smith College President Ruth J. Simmons was named the 18th president of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on November 9. and will begin her duties on July 1, 2001.
