The palace and the Trianon Hotel
The world-famous Versailles Palace, 16 miles southeast of Paris, was originally erected in 1624 as a hunting lodge, and was once the home of both Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. Today this beautiful, 700-room chateau, set on 250 acres of perfectly manicured lawns and gardens, attracts thousands of tourists. One of its most popular features is the lavish Hall of Mirrors, with its gold-leaf cherubs and ornate chandeliers. Viewing the 177 statues, famous paintings (such as "Taillebourg Victory" by Delacroix), and strolling through the grounds can take days. You'll need a place to sleep.
