Author Amy Tan is often credited with being an Asian-American role model; she also has been described as the writer who has given Chinese-Americans a voice _ two roles in which she is not entirely comfortable.
"When I was growing up, my parents used to point to Ginny Tiu, (a child pianist often on ``The Ed Sullivan Show'') and say, why can't you be like her?" Tan says from her San Francisco office.
"My parents had told me I would become a doctor, and then in my spare time, I would become a concert pianist," the author says.
