In 1998, I experienced my first South Atlantic Fishery Management Council meeting. At the time I was slightly apprehensive, very suspicious, and maybe just plain curious. At the same time, I had a very positive attitude about the prospects of fishery management.
I had contended for years that proper management in a no-nonsense (or political) fashion would protect my livelihood in commercial fishing, which started in 1966, as well as ensure that the resource would be healthy for generations to come.
