Outgoing Glendale Heights Village President Ben Fajardo has stepped into the April 3 election fray, endorsing his former adversary over his one-time ally.

Fajardo, village president since 1994, threw his support behind District 5 Trustee Chuck Wheeler during a speech at a Wheeler fund- raiser.

Wheeler's opponent for the president's seat is Linda Jackson, a 10-year District 4 trustee who was appointed deputy mayor by Fajardo. Jackson, who as deputy mayor filled in for Fajardo after he suffered a stroke in September 1999, said she considered the endorsement of Wheeler as a "slap in the face."
