LISBON has had its ups and downs over the centuries.

Five hundred years ago it was a world superpower, its brave explorers setting sail from it's bustling docks to navigate the globe.

The lands they discovered yielded untold treasures which were dutifully brought back to the city creating huge wealth.

But the nation's power and influence slowly declined as the shadow of big brother Spain increasingly eclipsed Portugal's former glory.
