CAMDEN -- Rebecca B. Phelps of Grandy Primary School in Camden has been named the 2001 northeast region Principal of the Year.
Phelps was chosen from among 20 regional candidates in the competition.
Students at Grandy Primary, an elementary school, have shown significant increases in math and reading scores since 1997, when Phelps became principal, said J. Freeman Paylor, senior vice president and Greenville city executive for Wachovia Bank, the sponsor of the award. Students have scored better than 75 percent at grade level during her tenure.
