ALPINE plants are survivors. They have to be, for you can find them growing in the most extraordinary places.
I've seen tiny patches of flower clinging to a rock face hundreds of feet above the ground. There's no soil, but they have rooted in the crevices of the cliff. Or there are plants that thrive in the loose shale that is constantly shifting and cascading down the hillsides.
