We were sitting on the skyway level of the Towle Building in Minneapolis, the relentlessly forgettable downtown office block that occupies the site of the much-lamented Metropolitan Building. The two of us were immersed in a pair of our favorite activities: playing hooky and eating doughnuts.
"This almost makes up for tearing down the Metropolitan," said my friend, referring to a magnificent cake doughnut slathered with maple frosting. I knew what he was talking about; I was getting carried away over a perfect chocolate-covered beauty.
"If it meant getting a taste of these babies," I said, "I'd have taken a swing at the old pile myself."
Not that the Lone Doughnut ...
