"Hannibal" is a full-bore freak show, with the emphasis on bore.
The monster conjured up by Anthony Hopkins' Oscar-winning performance a decade ago in "The Silence of the Lambs" was a demon who insinuated himself into your dreams and then decorated them with horrible pictures _ a sort of faint-by-numbers set. The difference between the two films is that "Hannibal" would prefer to gnaw the eyeballs right out of your sockets.
This movie shows, rather than tells; it surrenders Dr. Hannibal Lecter's considerable powers of menace and suggestion to a taste for Grand Guignol splatter. It's a sorry spectacle, the old guy out there disemboweling and fricasseeing ...
