THIRD WORLD BOOK PROJECT WINS KIWANIS AWARD
INDIANAPOLIS, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Trustees of Kiwanis International has named Harriet Van Meter of Lexington, Ky., as the 1989 recipient of the Kiwanis World Service Medal. The medal is accompanied by a $10,000 grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation to further the recipient's service activity.
Mrs. Van Meter is being honored as the founder of the International Book Project. She visited India in 1966 and was moved by the poverty she witnessed. When she returned home, she wrote a letter to the Hindu Times in Madras, India, and offered to send books or food to anyone who wrote to ...
