CHARLESTON, S.C. _ Lori Griffin walked into a local public hospital in October 1989 eight months pregnant thinking she was going into labor.
Doctors told the 36-year-old single mother of two that it was a false alarm. Her symptoms, the doctors told her, were probably caused by the stress of losing her job and home _ all because of Hurricane Hugo a week before.
What happened next resulted in a 12-year legal battle that has reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
