Feb. 4--Dr. Marcus Grompe was searching for clues to treating a rare liver disease when he hit unexpected pay dirt.
Grompe and others in his lab at Oregon Health Sciences University had developed a mutant mouse to study the human disease hereditary tyrosinemia Type I. The researchers found that they could grow an entirely new liver in the mouse to replace the diseased organ by introducing just a few hundred cells from a healthy animal.
