Mar. 3--SBC Communications Inc. said Friday that it was scaling back marketing of its phone service in markets outside its 13-state territory and discharging an undisclosed number of people.
The cuts affect the San Antonio company's SBC Telecom unit, which is in the midst of building a presence in 30 U.S. metropolitan areas such as New York, Boston and Miami.
The move is sure to raise eyebrows at the Federal Communications Commission, which required SBC to enter the markets as a condition to approving its 1999 purchase of Ameritech of Chicago. SBC said it's meeting ...
