We were bobbing in 5 feet of saltwater, some 75 yards out from the natural white sands and painted white lifeguard towers of the beach at Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Legs straining to keep the current from pulling us out of view of our families, who were frolicking in shallower water, we dads struck up a conversation.
He's in sales. Two kids. West Chester, Pa. "We come here fairly often, sometimes just for the weekend," he said, jumping to blunt the impact of an 8-foot wave crashing down on us. "It's a great place for families."
