SPENDING SOME TIME with my toes in hot sand during a winter vacation, it seemed appropriate to read about the Desert Fox.
I was halfway through an engrossing biography of Erwin Rommel when Alice the Artist invited a couple vacationing next door over for a glass of wine. They lived in Vancouver, B.C., and were of German extraction.
Hans glanced at the book lying on a table, and checked for the name of the author.
"Do you know anything about Rommel?" I asked.
He nodded. "I spent the entire desert campaign with the Afrika Corps," he said. And then he told us his World War II experience.
