Are integrated system hospitals more capable of capturing market share than other hospitals? New data from Aventis Pharmaceuticals Managed Care Trends Digest 2000 indicate that could be the case.
The Digest identified 604 hospitals and systems that were becoming integrated by 1999, and said these hospitals increased their market share substantially between year-end 1994 and year-end 1998 in each of five categories.
For example, these hospitals increased their market share of total outpatient surgeries to 42.7% of the total in 1998, compared with 32.5% in 1996 and 22.2% in 1994. They also increased their market share of total inpatient surgeries to 43.9% ...
