LONDON--British insurers may have to re-underwrite some life insurance policies following the decision this month of the Assn. of British Insurers to withdraw a request for underwriters to use four genetic tests that the ABI says currently lack adequate proof of their reliability.
The ABI last year sought formal government permission for insurers to use seven tests for specific genetic disorders in the underwriting process, and a request to use two other genetic tests is pending. The use of another test-one for Huntington's disease, a fatal, late-onset disease of the central nervous system-was approved by a government panel last October (BI, Oct. 23, 2000).
