Puget Sound-area lawmakers are proposing a package of new taxes to finance road improvements in the highly congested region, raising money that would be spent only in the region.
Senate Bill 6140, announced yesterday, could raise more than $500 million annually with a local 0.5 sales tax, 6-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax, per-vehicle license fee of up to $75 per year and an annual fee of up to $150 on large trucks and other commercial vehicles.
The measure, scheduled for a state Senate hearing in Olympia a week from today, was the latest response to proposals by a blue-ribbon commission on transportation appointed by Gov. Gary Locke. The bill proposes to ...
