This past year felt full of death. One of our godchildren, a twelve-year-old girl, died after eight days in the intensive care unit. She had been in an automobile accident. I was with her parents when they got the news that she was unlikely to survive, and was with her and her family when she died. About a month later my mother died. She had been in poor health for some time, but we didn't expect her to die so soon. Her death would have been even more difficult for us if my wife and I hadn't had a wonderful visit with my parents only a few months before.
