James L. Madden, a founder of Madden's on Gull Lake, died Friday at his home after a long illness.
Madden, 85, retired from the resort more than 10 years ago. He and his brother, Jack, built Madden's into one of the state's largest resorts, on more than 1,000 acres on Pine Beach Peninsula near Brainerd.
"Both Jim and his brother had a vision beyond the times. They invested wisely and were very good businessmen," said Jane Gunsbury, co-owner of the Quarterdeck Resort on Gull Lake.
