Apple pie makes life's best moments better. Apple pie makes life's more daunting moments a little less daunting. My mother taught me that valuable lesson. No matter the holiday, no matter the menu, Mom made an apple pie, and we always loved it. Every autumn when I left for college, Mom sent me off with a pie so I would have a taste of home.
And yet, somehow, until I started writing this column, I never asked for Mom's apple pie recipe. Maybe I felt she was the only one who could make it right: the light and fluffy crust, the mix of tart and sweet apples. When I actually did ask for the recipe, I felt something completely different:
