Remember when kitchen hoods were plain little things that hung almost unnoticed above the cooktop, or even popped up, then disappeared?
The once-ordinary range hood is now the focal point of many kitchens.
Hoods sparkle in stainless steel or gleam in brass or copper. Some look like a blacksmith forged them from wrought iron a century ago. Others are custom made with stucco and stone or wood trim.
The prices are attention getters, too. Today's upscale hoods can cost $8,000 - or more.
