Lt. Gov. Jane Swift said yesterday she won't be rushed into a decision on running for governor in 2002, even though Democratic heavyweight Joseph P. Kennedy II has bettered her odds by taking a pass on the race.

"I don't think I'm going to make news by saying beating a Kennedy in Massachusetts is a tough thing to do," Swift said. "Any serious potential candidate in 2002 has to be considering what the factors are."

But Swift said she still plans to wait until after she gives birth to twins in June to decide whether to seek the GOP nomination.

"That's a process that I'll go through with my family and other political advisers," she said.
