OSHA issued a final ergonomics rule in November 2000 to decrease the number of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) that result when "there is a mismatch between the physical capacity of the workers and the physical demands of their jobs." The rule was initially proposed in November 1999 and focused on manufacturing and manual handling jobs. However, the final ergonomics standard was revised to cover all general industry and includes MSDs caused by exposure to repetition, force, awkward postures, contact stress and vibration.
