WASHINGTON - Lt. Gov. Jane Swift, eager to rebuild her battered public image as she preps for the governorship, yesterday made a high-profile appearance before a Senate panel to warn against Internet commerce taxes.

Swift testified before the Senate Commerce Committee that new cybertaxes imposed by the government could imperil economic growth and spur fresh privacy concerns.

"I do not believe that people want the government keeping track of every item they purchase online - nor do I believe that this Orwellian oversight will encourage the sales of current electronic retailers," said Swift.
