Zinc oxide is a potent and reliable growth-promoting agent in young pigs. Concentrations of zinc oxide that far exceed dietary zinc requirements increase growth rates in early, conventionally weaned pigs regardless of diarrhea prevalence.
The efficacy of pharmacological doses of zinc oxide in preventing and/or alleviating diarrhea in young pigs is well documented by several researchers. However, there is no valid explanation concerning the mode of action of zinc oxide in weaning pigs even though zinc oxide antibacterial properties are well established in human medicinal practice.
