Legislation aimed at revitalizing urban toxic waste sites known as brownfields is drawing strong support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the insurance industry and an environmental group.
At a hearing on S. 350, called the Brownfields Revitalization and Environmental Restoration Act, the bipartisan legislation drew wide praise from a variety of interest groups.
EPA's new administrator, Christine Todd Whitman, said at a U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works hearing that the Bush Administration supports S. 350 and believes that brownfields revitalization should be enacted on its own merits.
