Mar. 14--Oregon has made little progress in hiring more minority teachers in the past decade despite rapid growth of minority students and promises to have the teaching force reflect student diversity.
In fact, the gap between teachers of color and students of color is widening, according to a new state report circulating this week among educators and lawmakers.
The percentage of minority students in all public schools in Oregon rose from 12.5 percent to 18 percent from 1992 to 1999, while the percentage of minority teachers went from 3.5 percent to 4.1 ...
