Formed in 1987 as an ad hoc study and discussion group by two women lawyers, Sisters in Islam (SIS) is a research, policy, and advocacy organization based in Kuala Lumpur. Registered as an NGO in 1992, the group is a prime example of the way Muslim women may counter reactionary politicized Islam, influence discourse and policy, and raise consciousness of the true nature of women's rights in Islam.
