You would think by now that every risk manager in the country would have a solid grasp of the basics of captives--certainly why, how and where to form one.
Yet despite the fact that captives have been front and center in the alternative market for more than two decades, I recently found myself sitting at a breakfast seminar packed with risk managers, all listening intently to the captive ABCs recited by a pair of brokers, a Vermont regulator and an actual captive owner.
Could it be, with the most recent soft market lasting for so many years, that an entire generation of risk managers has grown up in the business without having to consider the captive ...
