Co-ordinating Minister for the Economy since Aug. 2000, Ramli has been a political reformer and a prominent economist. He has worked as an economic consultant and, until Aug. 2000, headed the government's food distribution agency.

In October 2000 Ramli led arrangements for a $2.7 bn debt restructuring deal extended to Texmaco, a textiles and engineering conglomerate, under the stewardship of the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA). Ramli said later the deal was designed as a template for the restructuring of the remaining debt to be repaid by the 21 largest debtors by end-2000.
