A few years ago, third-graders in Heidi Geimer's class at Capitol Hill Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul could write a little book about the nine planets in the solar system.
Today, students have to work in teams to write about just one planet.
Geimer said her students' reading levels have decreased from eighth grade to about fifth grade. Forty percent of her students came to Capitol Hill this year through the controversial DISCOVER program for gifted students.
She's not the only Capitol Hill teacher adapting her teaching techniques to meet the slower learning pace of some of the new students.
