Throughout history, artists have created portraits and self-portraits. For my kindergarten students, this proved to be an exciting opportunity to explore different and unusual mediums, as well as introduce the features and expressions of our faces. To begin, we defined the words, "portrait" and "self-portrait." I then showed students a wide variety of both realistic and abstract portraiture.
The children were fascinated by 16th century realist portraits and by the artists' attention to detail. "That lady must be very rich because her dress is made of gold." They were excited and giggly after viewing several of Picasso's abstract women. "Look! She has a striped ...
