In 1918, after working in Europe for several years, Marsden Hartley returned to the United States. Since he didn't have a job, he was pleased to accept an invitation to teach some people in New Mexico who admired his art. When he arrived, he was happy to discover how inexpensive it was to live in the Southwest compared with New York.
At first, he didn't know much about the state or its landscape, but he soon discovered its natural beauty. He also learned about the arts of the Indian people of New Mexico and painted many pictures of church altarpieces (Santos). Because of these experiences, he remained near Taos and Santa Fe for over a year.
