We have a noble task ahead of us--reconstruction of our country. We cannot afford to allow the AIDS epidemic to ruin the realisation of our dreams.

As A POLITICAL EXILE who had lived in African countries already ravaged by the disease, Chris Hani, a major leader in the liberation movement, foresaw that South Africa's nascent AIDS epidemic could explode and destroy the country. [2] He challenged fellow activists to "learn to tackle these problems head on.... Some of us might regard this as a diversion from the important task of transfer of power to the people," but to ignore AIDS, he believed, would end their dreams.
