DEAR DR. BLONZ: I have a food pyramid question. I am trying to lose a little weight and have been told that I should not mix carbohydrates and protein foods. Supposedly, the USDA food pyramid is out of date, and foods high in carbohydrates should be moved up the pyramid and reduced in a person's diet. - S.W., Portland, Ore.
DEAR S.W.: I don't buy it. The idea that you cannot mix carbohydrate foods with protein foods makes little scientific sense, and it runs contrary to the way the human digestive system is built and functions. The fact you are interested in losing weight does not change this fact.
